I'll agree that geeks everywhere want this, but is it a viable product is the real question I'm asking. It's tempting to add features but no matter how small those features add up and create overhead that both users and manufactures have to deal with. Sooner or later they become distractions from what your original goal was - a drop dead simple web browsing tablet.

Geeks really, really, really want a piece of hardware that's an inexpensive tablet that has open-source software that they can replace/enhance. So the hardware should have USB and memory Card slots so there's room to expand.

Release CrunchPad as a simple Web browser for the masses (like iPhone was before SDK), but leave it open so us geeks can make it do what we want it to do.

Then you'll be able to download a free custom OS (like a customized LiveCD for musicians or artists or doctors) for it from SourceForge or some App Store.

Apps could be quickly made that read PDFs or connect to 3G networks or games (based on already existing open-source software).

The iPhone does run a "mainstream OS" (Mac OS X) and a "mainstream browser" (Safari; ok, kinda). The proper OS makes worthwhile apps possible and the real browser makes mobile web surfing bearable. Both are integral to its success.
